We are aware of an issue loading basemaps in QGIS 3.34 from QRiS or Q-Viewer. If you recently downloaded QGIS, and are having issues accessing basemaps, this issue arose in versions 3.34 and later. You can check the version of QGIS you are running by going to Help-> Check QGIS Version. You should also see the version you are running at start-up.
In order to see basemaps, there are a variety of work arounds.
Temporary Workaround 1 - Use QuickMap Plugin
You can use the QuickMap plugin to QGIS to add basemaps from a variety of providers. As shown in the video below, you will need to "Get Contributed pack" under the "More Services" tab in settings, to access Google Basemaps. By default, it only installs with NASA and Open Street Map.
Temporary Workaround 2 - Manually add WMS/XYZ
You can always manually add your preferred basemaps, but you will need to make sure you are using the newer address format.
Temporary Workaround 3 - Revert to earlier version of QGIS
Another option is to uninstall QGIS >= 3.34 and download the an earlier version of QGIS, (e.g. version 3.28). Note, QGIS does allow you to have multiple versions of the software installed simultaneously (so you can skip the uninstall optionally).
1. Navigate to https://download.qgis.org/downloads/
2. Select the desired version of QGIS that pre-dates v3.34 (e.g. QGIS-OSGeo4W-3.2X.XX-X.msi)
Longer Term Solutions
In the next few weeks we will release new versions of QRiS and QViewer, which you can upgrade to in the Plugin LIbrary. These releases will upgrade the Basemap addresses so they work.
